Kerala, known as "God's own country," captivates visitors with its lush landscapes, flowing rivers, and the rich cultural diversity of its people. Trichur, the cultural capital of Kerala, harmoniously blends the traditions of the north and south, and is home to iconic institutions like the Medical University, Kalamandalam, and the grand Pooram festival.
While Trichur boasts a wealth of educational and medical facilities, including clinics and a Cancer Research Centre, it lacked a super-specialty hospital for advanced care. Sun Medical and Research Centre was established to fill this gap, providing critical treatment at an affordable rate to those in need.
In 1978, a group of philanthropists and businessmen formed the Trichur Heart Foundation, led by Dr. P.M. Varkey, FRCP, to establish a hospital specializing in cardiac care. This initiative later led to the creation of Sun Medical and Research Centre, Kerala’s first investor-owned multi-disciplinary super-specialty hospital, with Dr. Varkey as its Chairman.
The project aimed to provide international standards in treatment and care. Launched in 1985, the foundation stone was laid by Pope John Paul II in 1986. Construction began in 1988 for a 500-bed facility, with central financial institutions like ICICI, IDB, and IFCI funding 75% of the project, and the rest contributed by the people of Trichur.
Phase 1 was inaugurated by President Sankar Dayal Sharma on 28th October 1992, making it the first multi-specialty hospital of its kind in Kerala, managed by an eleven-member board of directors.
